A trailblazing multi-disciplinary dance/music show asking 'Where does the violence go?' when we ignore cyclical trauma in creative industries?
Where does the Violence go? Looks at the cyclical violence perpetuated against queer, femme, black indigenous,People of colour and disabled people in the arts. How despite we see our art as a vehicle for social change we often fail to critically examine the ways in which these power structures filter down into our causes, communities and creativity.
Originally called ‘Life according to Motown’ the piece centred the story of Tammi Terrell who as an artist signed to Motown experienced many of the above intersections of oppression, including being in abusive relationships with powerful men, atheistically groomed to be palatable to white audiences and her story silenced when she became terminally ill.
When tracking Music History from 60’s to now against the changing political landscape, and interviewing close friends & collaborators on how abuse circulates in the music industry. We widened the lens to ask. Where does the violence go?
Where does violence go when we make art to resist violence? When do we consume art made in reaction to oppression? And how can we lean into transformative justice as opposed to re-appropriating trauma in the making of our work?
