Abstract artist KV Duong will be exhibiting large paintings on canvas from his “Identity” series as well as smaller works on paper in his first London solo show at the Streatham Space Project.
Exhibition: FREE ENTRY - Tues-Sat from 6pm: Oct 24th - Nov 27th
Opening Night: 6.30pm - 9pm Oct 26th. Special live body painting performance from the artist. (7.30 performance - 10 mins)
KV’s “Identity” series focuses on the merger of Chinese ink on mulberry paper with acrylic on canvas. He is exploring the Chinese oracle writing and calligraphy, constructing and deconstructing the characters into abstract forms. The process of construction and deconstruction is further explored physically (paper ripping), emotionally (i.e. chain mark making) and intellectually (understanding about the roots of the Chinese language)
Born in Vietnam and educated in Canada, KV Duong is a London based painter whose work focuses on personal identity, migration, sexuality and human relationships. He draws from personal experiences growing up in Saigon, Toronto and London to explore the integration and conflict of Eastern and Western cultures and values.
With a background in structural engineering, KV constructs layers of paint, paper and mixed media to investigate texture, form and materiality. He uses conventional brushes, household items and even his limbs as tools. His body paintings further extend self and emotional expression by including the physicality of space and movement with monochromatic acrylic paint. The intimacy and interaction of skin, canvas and paint is explored. KV is drawn to this physical method for its often unsettling quality and intense yet transient nature.
